Do I need an AC adapter to use my Macbook Pro in Europe?

I've been using a Macbook Pro 17" with an adapter in a European outlet that gives off 220V and someone told me I was frying my battery. They told me I needed an adapter to convert the 220V to 120V. Is this true? I am using the 85W Magsafe Power Adapter.
