Introducing the 11.6″ MacBook Air

If your interest has been sparked by the new 11.6" MacBook Air from Apple then this article will answer some of your questions. The 11.6" MacBook Air has some original features that make it very attractive to travellers and people who prefer a light, eminently portable computer. This article by Olive Bush will fill you in on the details.

The MacBook Air - Boldly Going Where Other Notebooks Don't
by Olive Bush

The new MacBook Air is the latest offering in the gizmo/techno war to hit the shelves just before Christmas. If you are fed up with hauling tons of awkward laptop weight around, is this the answer to your problem? Weighing in at just 2.3 pounds (1.06kg), and 0.11 inches (1.7cm) at the thickest point, no one could accuse this latest Apple offering of being too bulky. Join me as I review the MacBook Air - boldly going where other notebooks don't.

Not wanting to lose the edge it gained with the iPad release, Apple have reinvented the wheel with its new MacBook Air. Wanting to send a clear signal to the Pc industry and declaring it to be "like nothing we've ever created before", Apple boss Steve Jobs thinks that one day all notebooks will look like this. Which is just as well, since he was previously quoted as saying that netbooks were slow, cheap and not much good for anything!

So, what will you be getting for your £849 worth of 11 inch notebook? A full sized keyboard for starters, which is a huge bonus if you struggle to connect with the usually cramped ones and an excellent idea for multi-location business users. Then there is the Apple multi-touch trackpad, which allows you to click and operate anywhere. Keeping your fingers nimble, to adjust any image you simply swipe, pinch, rotate, zoom in, zoom out or flick to thumb through pages. The 'Click, tap and scroll' feature comes with instructions for the two finger scroll, three finger drag and four finger swipe - you have been warned!

Space-Saving Flash storage supplies quick access to your data and instant screen restoration following standby mode, even for up to 30 days. Simply closing the lid will suspend all function with instant pop-back after opening. With all that extra space comes a larger battery, so you can receive up to 5 hours of battery charge for the 11 inch MacBook and 7 hours for the 13 inch.

Providing all the usual leisure options for web-browsing, video watching and photo editing, yet another first for Apple is the FaceTime camera. This camera is so thin, it's smaller than the iPhone 4 camera. Making 'FaceTime' calls via Wi-Fi with other Mac, iPhone 4 or iPod touch users is possible in low light, thanks to the MacBook Air video quality.

Phew, and I haven't even yet mentioned the 2Gb of memory and LED backlight which allows more text on the screen. If you want more detailed information with product photos, go to the Apple MacBook Air website and prepare to be amazed.

Once again, here is life-transforming technology giving life-transforming options. If you dream of one of these to simplify your life so you can become your own boss - do it. Don't just dream about working from home, crank up the juice and make it happen! See what you can achieve by clicking on the following link now: http://www.earnyourwealth.co.uk. Travelling with the 11.6″ MacBook Air

One of the major attractions of the new 11.6" MacBook Air laptop from Apple is its sheer portability. Its size and its features make it the ideal notebook for travellers and computer users who want a lightweight machine that can handle most everyday tasks. In this article, Obediah Marsh explores some of the features of the new 11.6" MacBook Air:

Traveling With The 11.6" MacBook Air
by Obediah Marsh

The 11.6" model of the new MacBook Air seems to be the version that more consumers are interested in. This is probably since the United State Air Transportation authority has made it wear travelers do not have to remove the laptop from their possessions when they go through the security check points, which makes the Apple MacBook Air the only laptop device that gets this treatment. Thus, to frequent travelers, a huge time saver advantage.

Travelers are often commenting on the fact that the size of the 11 inch Mac Air is extremely easy to use while on board a plane. Everyone who has taken their laptop on the plane and intended to use it for whatever why they are flying are often surprised at just how cramped it is to use, especially if you are seated in Coach. The 11 inch MacBook Air is so small that it fits onto the drop down tray in front of you with ease, and the once annoying squished feeling experienced with so many other laptops is gone.

However, even with the size of the laptop, the usability of the device is still amazing. The keyboard is still plenty big enough to function well, and the screen may be smaller than other laptops, however it still contains amazing picture quality. Another great advantage of the 11 inch MacBook Air is that even after continued use of the machine, it never seems to overheat or become sluggish to respond. This was something that the past Mac Air just cannot compete with.

Another advantage of using the 11.6" MacBook Air while traveling is that it is designed much like the Apple iPad. This means that if you find you need to quit using the machine, you can simply shut the cover of the MacBook Air and toss it into your bag. There is no need to wait for the machine to put itself to sleep, yet again another way to effectively use your time.

The battery life of the 11 inch MacBook Air was around five hours, according to Apple. Those who have test driven the device have found that this is true. However, many worry that with doing multiple processes on the computer if the battery life would hold out while they were traveling. Those who did use the computer to watch movies, reported that they did get a solid five or more hours from the computer. Which means that if you are traveling, you should not have to worry too much about your battery life. However, with any computer it is wise to bring the power adapter to juice it up if the situation presents itself.

Migrating files to a MacBook Air

One of the tasks facing the new owner of a MacBook Air is migrating files from the old machine. With the MacBook Air's wireless-based connectivity, this may not be as quick and easy as of old.

'elbert', a member of PhilMUG (Philippine Macintosh Users Group), wanted to move stuff from his old 12" PowerBook to his new MacBook Air but he had some problems. As he explains in the PhilMUG forum:

The challenge:

  • To get my new MBA up and running as if it was my old computer, as simply and as quickly as possible.

The limitations:

  • My old Powerbook has more data than will fit into the MBA, with around 100GB worth of data inside my Home folder alone.
  • I don't have a Wireless N router, nor is the PowerBook wireless N capable. So the wireless Migration Assistant, a new feature made just because of the MBA, is going to be a really long process
  • The MBA has no FireWire port, and I would've liked to use Target Disk Mode as well as my trusty old FireWire drive to move stuff around, as well as to install my fave apps.

The answer:

Well... read elbert's ingenious solution on the PhilMug forum.
