How to change MacBook energy saver settings?

I have seen online that on previous versions, it has been possible just to go in to the energy saver preferences, and that there is a drop down menu which gives the option to change between better, normal, and worse performance in order to extend the battery life. My mac seems to be lacking this option. Any ideas? your help would be much appreciated, cheers.

  1. Click the Apple symbol in the top left hand corner of your screen, then click System Preferences, (should be the fourth option down). When it opens, click on lightbulb icon which says Energy Saver underneath it. It is on the second row down.

If Energy Saver is not there, you may have to reinstall your OS X software, as it may have lost the preference pane file.
