How to access dead Macbook?

When I try to switch on my macbook it doesn't work, it just comes up with a folder icon with a question mark on it. Any ideas as to what this means? Has anyone had this problem?
My charger also hasn't been working properly and I don't know if that could have caused a problem or not.
I have loads of music and photos on my computer and I don't want to loose everything. HELP!

  1. you may need a new battery.

  2. The question mark means that your Mac cannot find a valid system folder.

    1) Hold the Option down during boot to make it look for one. If this works, open the PDF link below and do steps 1, 2, 4, and 5. Do these steps once a month to keep your Mac happy.

    If this does not work:

    2) Open the PDF link below and do step 4 and 5 (step 4 booted from the CD instead of the hard drive). If this works, open the PDF link below and do steps 1 and 2. Do steps 1, 2, 4, and 5 once a month to keep your Mac happy.

    If this does not work:

    3) Open the PDF link below and do step 6.

If this does not work, call Apple for warrantee repair. You may have a bad hard drive.
