Why does my MacBook show black bars on my TV?

I have mirroring turned on and have messed with resolution and aspect ratio settings on the macbook with no luck. I have also auto adjusted the picture on my TV. It is hooked up through the mini-DVI to VGA adapter. My TV is Vizio VO420E and I have the black macbook. Any suggestions?
