How to transfer iTunes stuff from old Macbook to new Macbook?

I bought a Macbook Pro recently, and was curious about how to have my tv shows appear on my iTunes. I'm trying to do so without having to take them off my old Macbook, put them on an external drive, and then onto the new Macbook. For some reason, I thought iTunes would recognize purchased material? I have set up my iTunes on my new Macbook, but all of my purchased material is not showing up. Any suggestions?
